The Leap

I had seen a fox go this particular route earlier and I wanted to see if the fox would be here tonight also.

It was a quite chilly spring evening, but luckily I was properly equipped with warm camouflage.

Dressing warmly became necessary as third hour of lying down on the ground was about to begin.

I also fought against time. The sun was already setting behind the forest border and it was only a matter of minutes to get a picture in the best possible light.

Suddenly out of nowhere a fox appeared in my sight. It was a nursing fox, so obviously she was

hunting for food! I started photographing her as she was approaching my location.

The fox halted and turned her head apparently listening to the vole moving at the bottom of the ditch. Then something unbelievable happened, the fox jumped high in the air, praying on the vole.

The feeling of success was incredible since it was the first time in my life I managed to photograph a hunting, jumping fox. Even the light was a perfect backlight, giving the fox golden borders.

Foxes have exceptional hearing and are able to detect the slightest rustles in the grass! The actual act of hunting and leaping is called mousing. It goes without saying that this photo is named 'The Leap'.
