The Watcher

The goal was to capture a fox in photos. I had been in the hide for about 30 minutes when a tractor arrived to spread fertilizer on the fields. Unfortunately, that photo opportunity passed. But I knew I'd find something else.

My instincts led me to a spot where I had previously seen a lynx on a game camera, near the badger den I'd observed the previous winter. After driving a few kilometers, I spotted something sizable in the field. Thoughts raced through my mind: could it really be...?!

I turned the car around, drove back, lowered the window, and took the first series of photos at the field's edge. After checking the images, it turned out to be a lynx.

Adrenaline surged as I realized the treasure before me—an elusive lynx. With cautious steps, I exited the car, swiftly attaching the camera to the tripod, aiming to avoid any abrupt noises that might disturb the lynx. I believed the vehicle posed less threat to the lynx than a human on foot, so the pivotal moment came when I emerged from behind the car, revealing my presence to the lynx.

Crossing a small ditch, I lowered myself gently to the ground, ensuring no sudden movements startled the lynx. Respecting wildlife has always been my priority; minimizing disturbance to animals takes precedence over capturing a remarkable shot.

Remarkably, the lynx seemed unperturbed by my presence, engrossed in its evening pursuit of rabbits. Its behavior, uncharacteristic for most lynxes upon sensing human presence, allowed me an intimate view. It even took a brief rest nearby, displaying trust in my quiet presence. As the evening unfolded, the lynx approached my position, granting me a generous few hours in its company, an extraordinary and valued window of observation.
